MacOS Updates and Restart Behavior Policy

Body

Device Updates and Reboots Behavior:

  1. Updates will download from Apple software servers as they are released. Once the update is recorded, on the next log-in a request to update will be triggered. Users can choose to delay these updates for the next three days, or start now as pictured below. Unfortunately due to certain limitations after an option is selected the window will disappear. Even if the updates were triggered there is no way to check on their progress until they complete.

  2. After the 3rd day if the updates have not been installed the window will not be closeable or able to be dismissed until the software update is started. If a reboot is required a reboot prompt will immediately appear following the completion of the install.

  3. All reboots will allow the user to reboot immediately or delay up to 60 minutes. Once the reboot deadline is reached a restart will be triggered on the device. If no user is logged in and a reboot is required, the computer will automatically reboot when needed.

How to Self-Update

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences

  2. In the System Preferences window select Software Update

  3. Inside Software update you will have the option to install now or restart now, depending on the update
